Mission: To equip Orthodox clergy and laity to navigate the intersection between Orthodox Christian Holy Tradition and the principles and institutions of free and flourishing societies.
We do this work with the blessing of Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit.
The Institute exists to bring Orthodox wisdom into urgent conversations about freedom, society, and faith. Our research addresses questions often left unanswered:
By recovering the history of liberty in the Christian East, engaging in ecumenical dialogue, and examining the moral limits of freedom, we provide a unique voice that bridges Holy Tradition with the challenges of today’s world.
Human Dignity and the Image of God
Every person is made in the image of God and worthy of respect and freedom.
Impartial Justice
A commitment to the rule of law, the common good, and fair treatment for all, grounded in the natural law.
Personal Mercy
The Gospel commands us to go beyond justice for the Kingdom of God, meeting each person with whatever mercy he or she needs.
Catholicity (Sobornost’)
The Incarnation and Resurrection of Jesus Christ bind together heaven and earth, clergy and laity, even rich and poor through the Church.
Divine Wisdom & Spontaneous Order
God works through our creative endeavors—whether business, friendships, or other associations—to bring about goods even we do not intend.
Liturgical Worldview
Seeing all of life through a sacramental and ascetic lens.
Liberty
Religious, political, and economic freedom are essential conditions for human flourishing and rooted in our Orthodox Tradition.
Each year we convene Orthodox scholars and leaders to apply the insights of Holy Tradition to today’s world. These conferences foster rigorous research and collaboration, producing scholarship that speaks both to the Church and the wider world.
Rooted in prayer, fellowship, and dialogue, our retreats provide clergy with resources and space to reflect on pastoral challenges. By engaging with conference findings and offering feedback, clergy help shape the ongoing research and ensure it meets the needs of parish life.
From translated texts to original essays and volumes, our publications bring Orthodox perspectives to bear on questions of liberty, economics, culture, and technology. This work bridges the gap between timeless tradition and contemporary society.
Our fellows include Orthodox theologians, economists, philosophers, bioethicists, and others determined to bring the timeless voice of Orthodox Tradition to bear on the unique problems of the present day.
Our President Dylan Pahman has been a research fellow at the Acton Institute for since 2011, where he served as executive editor of the Journal of Markets & Morality.
He earned his PhD from St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, on the basis of his published works on Orthodox Christian social thought and asceticism.
He is the author of The Kingdom of God and the Common Good and Foundations of a Free & Virtuous Society.

Dylan’s new book The Kingdom of God and the Common Good is now available!
Other Christian traditions have developed their own modern social thought to address contemporary economic problems since the industrial revolution. But what about the Orthodox Tradition?
This book surveys Scripture, Orthodox Church history, and modern economics to provide the frameworks, principles, and tools needed to fulfill Christ’s teaching today.
We welcome inquiries from clergy, scholars, journalists, and all who are interested in the work of the Institute. Whether you’re looking to request a speaker, learn more about our research, or explore ways to support our mission, we would be glad to hear from you.
